CHAPTER TWENTY
Rebecca
The sheriff and Doug arrive and deal with the body. Doc has gone to visit some patients. The sheriff, leaving Doug to do his work along with the deputy, saunters over to where I am standing.
"Well, Miss Angel. Any insight?" His tone may sound mocking, but I see in his eyes that he really wants to hear what I have to say.
"Boug alerted me to the body early this morning. The men pulled him out of the water and laid him on the dock, where he is now. He looks like the man Mr. Freeman described who threw some powder at him and shot up the Downs cattle camp. I noticed he had something in his pocket. I took it out and put it on the dock. You see it is still there where I left it. Boug told me that the contents are human. I would surmise that they are powdered human bone."
The sheriff crosses his arms and considers what I said. "Thank you, Miss Angel. That is very valuable information. Anything else I should know?"
I struggle with telling him about the reason for the powdered bones. No, not yet. I need to figure it out first. I shake my head.
He heads back to the coroner.
Nothing left to do here. I need to check on Missy and Miss Emily's children. They are the priority.
I arrive at the Downs house. Miss Emily doesn't answer the door. Another servant does. Not good. Expected, I'm ushered to Missy's room immediately.
"So Missy, how do you feel today?" I see her propped up with some pillows. The room is full of light and air. No Miss O'Brien.
"Hi, Miss Angel. I'm feeling much better," she slurs. I'm glad to see her spirits are high.
"How are my friends?" she asks.
"I'm checking on them next. Wanted to make sure that you are on the road to recovery. So how is Dolly?"
She quickly looks around and points to her friend propped in the corner of the room. "Miss Emily forgot to bring her to me this morning. I think she is worried about my friends."
"Would you like Dolly to be with you?"
"Oh Miss Angel, yes. She is my best friend."
I walk over, snag the doll, and nestle it into her arms.
"Thank you, Miss Angel."
Miss Emily's replacement walks me back to the front door.
I turn to her and ask, "Where is Miss Emily."
"Home, Miss. Her child is ailin'. I told her that I'd help at the house."
I head behind the plantation house to the small structure Miss Emily calls home. I knock. Miss Emily answers.
She has not been evicted. Yet.
"Oh Miss Emily, I was so worried about you."
"The other servants are covering for me so that Mr. Downs doesn't fire me. Rebecca took a turn for the worse last night."
"Let me see her."
Miss Emily lets me in to see Rebecca. Her brother is sitting up and is animated. Recovering. Rebecca is buried in quilts and non-responsive.
"Rebecca, honey. Talk to me. How are you feeling?" I check her pulse. Thready.
